Why DADAH? | Webster University


The Department of Art, Design, and Art History (DADAH) offers an art academy-like education in art, design, and art history within a liberal arts institution. DADAH students focus intently on their art-making or art scholarship while simultaneously benefitting from other academic fields. The synthesis informs our students’ experiences and production, enabling in them individual communicative voices to participate within our culture and society.

BFA Show 2014The DADAH faculty works to foster a sense of inclusion within a broader art community. The DADAH is closely connected with St. Louis artistic institutions, such as the St. Louis Art Museum, the Contemporary Art Museum, Laumeier Sculpture Park, as well as local galleries and design firms. Students regularly hold internships at these institutions and businesses, while figures from these institutions and further abroad visit to speak at the Friday Artist Lecture Series, to design classes, and to examine student portfolios, along with other opportunities for students to network.

More fundamentally, the culture of the DADAH creates a collegial, supportive, even familial atmosphere for faculty and students. Faculty not only know students’ names, they care about each one’s development and work hard with each individual to help him or her achieve expressed goals. The individualized approach derives in part from the small class sizes—the largest courses (Introduction to the History of Western Art and Introduction to Drawing) top out at twenty and fifteen students, though the vast majority of classes average at about eight to ten students (many have less). DADAH is much more than its courses and time in class.
