BIT Protocol

BIT has developed a protocol to ensure that concerning student behavior, mental health issues, or incidents are addressed consistently.* 

Reporting Incidents to the BIT

In cases of emergency, reporters must contact Public Safety (314-968-6911) or 911. The BIT plays a secondary role in all emergency situations and should be contacted only after making contact with emergency response personnel (i.e. Public Safety; 911).

An on-line reporting form is set up for submitting alerts for any student within the Webster University network. Each report should include as much detail as possible about the behavior and/or incident of concern. Once an incident report is submitted, the reporter will receive a computer-generated response (as long as an email address was provided), acknowledging the report has been successfully submitted. Similar to the Neighborhood Watch program, the BIT encourages individual and collective responsibility in reporting student behaviors of concern. Click here to complete an online alert form. 

  • All employees should consider it their responsibility to report concerning behaviors for the safety and well-being of the student and campus community.†
  • All reports should be made to BIT and/or the direct supervisor
  • Incident reports should be reported to BIT via the online form or by contacting Public Safety at 314-968-7430. Include as much detail as possible.
  • Faculty/staff/community members can reach BIT staff through the Dean of Students office at 314-968-6980 during regular business hours. After hours, refer to the BIT website at Emergencies should ALWAYS be reported to 314-968-6911 (DPS) or 911. They will contact the BIT as needed.
  • When determining what is reportable, err on the side of over-reporting.  Please refer to Identifying At-Risk Students for more information.  While an isolated event may appear minor, other similar incidents occurring in close proximity may indicate a pattern of concerning behavior. BIT Actions

BIT will determine which member(s) will assess the incident report and determine actions consistent with University policy

Assessment may include:

  • Confirming to reporting parties that the report was received
  • Clarifying details
  • Interviewing the involved individual(s)

Initial actions may include:

  • Referring student to appropriate support services
  • Facilitating meeting between concerned parties
  • Contacting parents, guardians, roommates, friends, faculty, coaches, etc.

Part of this protocol is an assessment of whether such notifications are legally permitted, and whether such notifications could be helpful or harmful to the intervention and to risk management priorities

Situations involving student(s) demonstrating an imminent threat to harm of self or others should be referred immediately to the Department of Public Safety, and then to the Dean of Students office.

  • Follow-up actions may include:
    • Mandating psychological assessment
    • Voluntary/involuntary removal from campus
    • Establishing criteria for a student's return to the campus
    • Coordinating supportive services for the student
    • Establishing behavioral contract
    • Confirming continuity of care

Student Response

  • Accept actions determined by BIT
  • Appeal actions, via written response, to the BIT Chair or the Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs
  • Failure to comply (may result in referral to the University Conduct Officer for disciplinary action, which could include dismissal)
